Description: Phaseolus coccineus (Runner Beans) and Phaseolus vulgaris (Common Beans) are members of the Bean Family (Fabaceae). The Hortus Kewensis, ed. 2 did not mention Phaseolus coccineus but it is known to have originated in the mountains of Central America, while Phaseolus vulgaris originated in Central and South America.  Because of the limited amount the plant shown, it is not possible to distinguish which of the two species are represented.
